Appraisal FAQs
I’m considering selling. Do I need a formal appraisal?
No. Investing in a formal documented appraisal would be redundant. A free valuation here, or a pre-auction estimate from our sister-site SoulisAuctions.com, will save you time and money.
Can I get a free valuation before committing to anything?
Yes. For new, first-time clients, we offer no-cost, no-obligation professional opinions of value based on your photos and basic details. This is perfect if you’re simply curious, unsure about the value, or trying to decide whether a formal appraisal is needed. There is a three-item limit.
What kind of appraisal do I need?
It depends on the purpose:
- Insurance – Replacement value
- Estate or inheritance – Fair market value
- Charitable donation – Fair market value for IRS
- Divorce, legal settlement or family division – Equitable distribution value
- Selling or gifting – Fair market value
We’ll guide you to the right kind.
Will I eventually need a formal appraisal?
Not always. That’s why we start with a free valuation. If it turns out you need the documentation that a formal appraisal provides for insurance, estate, or legal purposes, we’ll walk you through the next steps. But in many cases, a professional opinion is all you need to make an informed decision.
What does a formal appraisal include?
A professional USPAP-compliant report includes photographs, detailed descriptions, and a written valuation based on current market data.
How much does it cost?
In most cases, we charge a flat fee of $99 per item with a $250 minimum. There are no hidden fees, no drive-time charges, and most reports are delivered within hours, not days or weeks. Volume discounts may apply for large, well-organized collections. Appraisals for divorce, donation, potential litigation, etc. may be charged on a per-hour basis. A discount of $50 applies to clients who send preliminary images of the property to be inspected.
How long does it take?
Most formal appraisals are completed within a few days. Rush service is available if needed.
How do I get started?

What kinds of things do you appraise?
Through this Kansas City web site we specialize in fine art:
• Paintings signed and unsigned
• Watercolors, drawings and other works on paper
• Pencil-signed prints
• Sculpture in various mediums
• All manner of important art objects
Do you authenticate artworks?
We do not provide forensic authentication services like pigment testing. However, we do provide opinions based on various criteria like signatures, technique, style, material used, markings, labels etc. to assist with identification, attribution, and valuation based on style, provenance, and market comparables.
Do you offer art auction services?
Yes! For nearly 30 years we’ve operated a separate division dedicated to marketing and selling fine art through targeted, online global auctions. Our appraisal process often helps clients determine whether to insure, donate, or consign for sale.
Where are you located?
Our satellite office is in Kansas City, Missouri. We serve clients across the Midwest and beyond. Appraisals can be done remotely or in person depending on your location and needs.
What if my family has a house full?
Some situations warrant what we call a Virtual Valuation. Through Facetime or other audio video options we can offer preliminary information, identify important items and provide guidance on potential next steps.
